Qualifications
Both DHS and the CSO sector employ people with a range of qualifications depending on the requirements of the job. Qualifications start with TAFE Certificates and range to tertiary qualification and graduate qualifications.
This site outlines current and previous qualifications recognised within the disability sector and also provides links to education institutions where you can gain a new qualification.
It can be possible to commence work and study at the same by undertaking a traineeship.
The titles of qualifications available in the Community Services work area with the specialisation Aged Care and Disability Work are:
- Certificate II in Community Services Support Work
- Certificate III in Aged Care Work
- Certificate III in Home and Community Care
- Certificate IV in Aged Care Work
- Certificate IV in Service Co-ordination (Ageing and Disability)
- Certificate III in Disability Work
- Certificate IV in Disability Work
- Diploma of Disability Work
- Advanced Diploma of Disability Work
Even though the qualification names change, the training done in the past and the qualifications remain valid. For example, the constant reviewing of the training packages does not mean that the CIVICS qualification is no longer acceptable. It simply means that training will keep trying to deliver the best results for industry. This might mean that someone with an older qualification might want to do some training from the new Units of Competency for their own benefit. This can help a worker to demonstrate that they are up-to-date with their learning.
In some situations the employer might want the workers to train from some new Units of Compete might be that new or different circumstances have come up in the work place, or there wasn't’t training that really targeted the need in earlier qualifications.
