Field graduate profile – Duy Phan
I had the opportunity to chat with Duy Phan who is one of Field’s recent graduates. I asked him about his experience of studying with Field and where his studies led him – Here’s what he had to say…
What is your employment background?
I worked at TOYOTA for 23 years as a team leader.
What made you decide to have a change in career?
After TOYOTA closed down I didn’t know what to do and Independence Australia were offering a traineeship – Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) – and I applied.
Did you always have an interest in the sector?
Yes, I did – I have a friend who has had 10 years’ experience as a disability support worker (DSW) and I learned a lot from him about the role.
Since your graduation, what type of employment experiences have you had?
I completed my qualification in December 2018, and since then I have worked for Independence Australia as a DSW. I really look forward to working more and to developing and improving my skills.

I undertake personal care and community access for individuals with disability.
Would you recommend this type of work to others?
Yes, I absolutely would.
How has working in the Disability sector changed you as a person and how you view life now?
Working in the disability sector has changed me – I am calmer and have more patience.
